A GOOD DAIRY STRUCTURE.

A good cow needs good housing & feeding. Care for your cows to produce more milk & make you more money.

Why design cow barns

Naturally cows spend their day (24 hours) in the barn (if under zero grazing):

· 58% resting and ruminating

· 17% eating and drinking

· 17% milking

· 8% socializing

All these activities enhance general cow welfare and productivity in the farm. It is therefore important to keep the cows in an environment that will accommodate the above activities.

The cows in the cow barn need:

· Feed

· Water

· Light

· Air

· Rest

· Space

· and be of good health

Good principles considered when designing a cow house or barn:

1. Cow comfort

2. Labor efficiency or optimization for the whole structure; a lot discussed here was the different flows in the farm (feed flow, cow flows, manure flow, milk, manure flows and human flows)

3. Simple, robust, flexible and expandable; proper designing of cow barn allow for ease of expansion and cost effective.

4. Farm expansion is done in steps to allow for growth of herd over a period of time.
